BREAKING News: Supreme Court Upholds Wike’s Victory

The Supreme Court today upheld the victory of the governor of River State,Nigeria, Mr. Nyesom Wike. This judgement overruled the initial judgement of the Appeal Court which upheld the nullification of his election by the Election Petition Tribunal.
Governor Wike had filed twenty grounds of appeal to the Supreme Court, alleging that the election tribunal relied on hearsay and inadmissible evidence to arrive at its judgment.
According to Governor Nyesom Wike,  Tribunal had wrongly refused to follow the decision in Agbaje versus Ambode, which held that the use or non-use of card reader cannot be a ground for questioning or nullifying an election.
The Supreme Court also grant Governor Wike request asking the apex court to hold that the findings and conclusions of the Election Tribunal were perverse and not supported by any legally admissible evidence on record.

Brazil Fights Mosquitoes to Quell Olympians’ Zika Fears

Health officials are seeking to allay fears of tourists and athletes coming to Rio for this year’s Olympics by intensifying their efforts to tame a triple epidemic of mosquito-borne diseases, including the Zika virus linked to thousands of cases of infant brain damage.
State health officials over the weekend said they would increase the frequency of inspections of possible mosquito-breeding grounds at Olympic venues in the months leading up to the Games, which run from Aug. 5 to 21, and would conduct daily inspections during the event. If necessary, they said, they would fumigate Olympics sites before the Games.
Organizers are also counting on cooler weather and less rain in August, a winter month in the Southern Hemisphere, to curb mosquito activity.

Japanese Economy Minister Akira Amari, a close ally of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said Thursday he would resign to take responsibility for a political-funds scandal.

Mr. Amari said he was resigning to avoid harming Mr. Abe’s economic revitalization program and to ensure the budget for the fiscal year beginning April 1 would be passed by Parliament without undue delay.
