Health benefit of unripe plantain

Unripe plantain aka Musa Paradisiaca is an excellent food for all and sundry because of its nutritional significance. No wonder it is an ideal diet for children, men and women. Due to the nutritional content of this food, it is regard as being one of the healthiest diets across the globe. In addition, it is unique with a lot of health benefits.

Enumerated below are some of the unripe plantain health benefits and reasons why this diet is good for your consumption.

1,Plantains are very reliable sources of starch and energy.
2, Plantains contain a high amount of dietary fibre which helps ensure healthy bowels and reduces constipation.
3, Plantains have more vitamin C than bananas. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin-C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen-free radicals.
4, Plantains have more vitamin A than bananas. In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, vitamin A plays a vital role in the visual cycle, maintaining healthy mucus membranes, and enhancing skin complexion.
5, As in bananas, they too are rich sources of B-complex vitamins, particularly high in vitamin-B6 (pyridoxine). Pyridoxine is an important B-complex vitamin that has a beneficial role in the treatment of neuritis, anemia, and to decrease homocystine (one of the causative factors for coronary artery disease (CHD) and stroke episodes) levels in the body.
6,Plantains also contain folates, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin. Folates (folic acid) are essential for healthy pregnancy.
7, Plantains also provide adequate levels of minerals such as iron, magnesium, and phosphorous. Magnesium is essential for bone strengthening and has a cardiac-protective role as well.
8, Plantains have more potassium than bananas. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure, countering negative effects of sodium.
9, Plantains are famed to be diuretic and can help prevent kidney and bladder problems.
10, Plantains ease the discomfort associated with the menstrual period.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE BIAFRAN AGITATIONS(Part3)

Written by Rev Sunday Adelaja

WHO ARE THE MARGINALIZED PEOPLE IN OUR WORLD TODAY?
  1.     THE KURDISH PEOPLE
A study into the Kurdish people will reveal to us what it means to be marginalized. These people are said to be largely marginalized in the true sense of the word in countries like Iraq, Turkey, Syria, etc. Despite the fact that it is well known that they are hugely deprived and oppressed, still they cannot break away from those countries to get their own nation. In spite of the fact that the whole world knows about their plight, no one country is willing to risk the benefit of cooperation with the existing countries to officially take the side of the Kurdish people. Friends, it is not easy to break away from a recognized state even in the case of oppression, much less when it is difficult to prove such cases.
  1.     THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE
Thanks to mass media and worldwide television networks, everybody is pretty aware of the plight of the Palestinian people. As much as we love and support Israel, we cannot deny the fact that the Palestinian people are a marginalized group of people. Contrary to the belief of many, the Palestinians are not only marginalized by Israel, they are also marginalized in the Arab countries as well. They are marginalized in countries like Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, etc. The level and stages of marginalization of the Palestinian people varies from one place to the other. It is impossible to say that in Nigeria, the Igbo people are as deprived as the Palestinian people.
  1.     THE TUTSI PEOPLE
We have all heard of the tragedy of Rwanda, where the Hutu nation committed a huge genocide against the Tutsi people. Most of the world talk about how wicked the Hutu people were to have murdered about a million Tutsis in a matter of days, but hardly do we ever question what it is that led to it. Well, what led to it is the story of marginalization. The Tutsis have always been the privileged few in the nations of Rwanda as well as Burundi. The massacre, therefore was an expression of the dissatisfaction with the form of marginalization, which had been practiced for years against the Hutu people. We all know how this ended. May God never allow us in Nigeria to experience what marginalization really means.
  1.     THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH SUDAN
The latest country to have gained independence in the continent of Africa is South Sudan. They fought hard and long for this privilege. They really knew what marginalization meant in the nation of Sudan. As black people, being significantly different from the Arab majority of Sudan, they were hugely marginalized and deprived. In their case, South Sudanese people will testify to you that all the factors of marginalization that were listed above were experienced by them. Needless to say, that situation led them to agitate for an independent state. It led to a protracted war lasting for over 30 years, before the international community agreed with them that they needed independence.
I am not sure the Igbo people want to forfeit all the privileges and opportunities they have now, to engage in a protracted war with the rest of Nigeria or any other nation. Peace is more important! This should be known better by the Igbo people who lost close to a million lives in the Biafra war. According to the words of the man who led that war, Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu, “it will be foolish of anyone to try to start another war, there is no need for it.” That is what Ojukwu said before he departed from this world.
  1.     THE KOSOVO PEOPLE
The name Slobodan Milosevic has become synonymous with evil, thanks to the world television networks. He managed to earn that vicious title due to his treatment of the Kosovo people. Kosovans will tell you what marginalization means. It is true that Kosovo is now a semi-independent state, but they too will tell you how many lives were lost, and other losses they incurred before the world managed to pay attention to their plight.
Even today, not all countries have recognized Kosovo as an independent state. Hundreds of thousands of lives were sacrificed, yet they are still unable to enjoy their dream of a prosperous independent state. The man behind their suffering is the name I mentioned above; Slobodan Milosevic – The strong man of Serbia.
Unlike Serbia though, there is no overly dominating and controlling tribe in Nigeria, as was the case in Rwanda, Serbia, Yugoslavia, or even in Russia. The three main tribes in Nigeria are almost all equally balanced.
  1. THE BLACK SOUTH AFRICANS
Without going far, it is easy for every African to associate marginalization with apartheid, when the black people of South Africa were largely marginalized in their own country. In spite of the obvious injustice of that regime, it took about 40 years of struggle before they could be recognized by the whole world as freedom fighters. As blatant as apartheid was, the countries of the world, especially developed western countries, did not support the armed resistance of the South African black majority. Nelson Mandela had to sacrifice 27 years of his life in prison before the world would grant the South African people their dream of equal rights.
I am sorry my dear Biafrans, what proofs and facts of marginalization can the Igbo people produce against Nigeria to justify their recognition by the international community as an independent state?  It is virtually impossible in our modern world today.
  1.     THE PEOPLE OF ERITREA
Let’s go to the country of Eritrea and they will tell you how many lives they had to sacrifice before they could gain their right to independence. Beside the wars and damages that these people have had to endure, their struggle and campaign for independence lasted for years. I mean years of fighting, killing, bombing, shelling and destructions. Even after the war was over, they had to agonizingly endure decades of reconstruction. A Yoruba proverb says “it is only those that have not lived to see a war that dream about one.” I am not sure that the Biafran nation or the Igbo people are ready for another war that could cost them the very existence of their people.

Ways To Get A Good Job In A Tough Economy

It is no secret that Nigeria and Africa is going through tough times when it comes to the economy. Not only is it affecting government policies but the negative impact is extending to private businesses, which is leading to major job cuts. Just recently, Telkom announced about 600 layoffs and earlier on, Vihiga County sent employees packing. Why? The blame is again on the dwindling Naira.
So, how can a job seeker trust that a certain company they are applying jobs in won’t be affected to the extent of major layoffs? The simple answer to this question is you can never know for sure. However, there are measures you can take up that will help you find good jobs even in this tough economy.

4 Ways Job Seekers Can Get Jobs In A Tough Economy

1. Focus on the growing industries
Some industries are hit hard during a tough economy, which means that jobs will be hardly available in the sector and people will be laid off left, right and centre. The same applies to companies that are not exactly stable or are having a hard time staying relevant.
For this reason, it is important that you do your research well. In a tough time where almost all companies are not looking to hire or are seeking to hire interns (to save on money), you can look towards startup companies that look promising. Consult a professional if you must.
2. Take up temporary jobs
Again, as mentioned above, companies will hardly be looking to hire in most jobs during a bad economy and those looking to hire will be very choosy in their selection process. To counter this, as a job seeker you cannot afford to be picky. Even if you are looking for a permanent opportunity, do not say no to a temporary job.
And by temporary, it could be an internship position that you are overqualified for or a job offered on contract basis. If the position will add on your expertise and propel you to a better position in the future, go for it.
3. Be more careful with details than ever
As laid out in this earlier article, Perminus Wainaina, Corporate Staffing Services CEO mentions that some employers have currently put recruitment on hold to facilitate for saving on costs. This means that employees will be doing more work and the unemployed will have a hard time getting jobs.
It also means that when the need for extra persons arises, employers and recruiters will be beyond strict in specifications. For this reason, you cannot afford to make simple mistakes in your job applications or interviews.
4. Network than ever before
Especially with the holidays coming up, this is the best time to get in touch with your networks as you form new ones. Talk to your friends and relatives, meet people and indulge them about how you are currently looking for a job, talk to those relatives you consider proud during gatherings and attend more networking events.
Networking is the most effective methods of job searching; capitalize on it during these tough economic times.
And in the midst of all this, remember to stay positive.

YOUR INTERNAL BEAUTY

                                                        Written by Pst Sam Oluwatoye

FOCUS VERSE:   1 Timothy 2: 9-10
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

BIBLE READING:  1 Timothy 2: 1-15

Have you discovered that so many people are always concerned about how they look? Well, I think as humans, it is natural to be concerned about our looks because that is what other people use to judge us when they get to meet us for the first time. As a matter of fact, the Bible says that Prophet Samuel was convinced about Eliab being the chosen King by God when he first met him. However, it has also been discovered that this first impression that people have when they see us for the first time based on looks does not last. No matter how appealing you are at first sight, it will take a lot more than physical appearance to sustain a good impression. Apostle Paul was aware of this and that was why he instructed people using the women as a case study to look beyond external beauty but give more preference to internal beauty.

If you are used to women, you would know how important it always is for them to make their hair, use a lot of facial make-up, ensure that they have a color match on their clothes, shoes and bags, organize their walk and arrange their communication. While all this is very good, we are encouraged to ensure that we do not overdo many of these things as what makes for a beautiful life is beyond the external looks but the internal looks also. Apostle Paul in our devotional today encourages that we should be modest in external looks. This is why I would always encourage people to spend a lot more on their personal development than the way they look outside. Some people can do anything just to acquire what they need for external beauty. As a matter of fact, I have seen some wives fight their husbands over fashion and so many other things that do not last. Thank God for my family because we have certain principles that give preference to internal beauty over external beauty. For example, in my home, my wife and I had agreed long ago that we do not buy family arranged costumes ‘’aso ebi’’. This is because we have discovered that most of such clothes become useless after their use and most times, people have to go an extra mile just because they want to purchase those clothes. Well, it may not be the same in your home but the principle should remain the same and that is to give more preference to internal beauty.

The encouragement this morning is to give preference to character which Apostle Paul calls good works. This is what brings about a more lasting impression of people about you. Your character defines you more than anything else. Don’t be the kind of person who is so handsome or beautiful on the outside but wicked on the inside. Let your inner beauty reflect God. Be kind, nice, friendly, warm, exciting, and loving to people. I pray that we shall all reflect the image of the Almighty God in our lives in Jesus name.

ACTION POINT: Place more priority on a good character than external beauty from now on.

TODAY’S CONFESSION:
1. I reflect the nature and the character of God everywhere I go from today in Jesus name.

2. My life is an example to all those who come in contact with me for good in Jesus name.

3. The blessing of the Lord is evident all around me and everything that concerns me from today in Jesus name.
