Just like pregnancy test done at home, malaria can now be tested by self, at home and at ease.
Scientists from Fyodor Biotechnologies, Baltimore, USA and Geneith Pharamaceuticals in Lagos, on Wednesday unveiled the first ever urine-based test for malaria fever.
Hitherto, blood-based test has been the only means of detecting malaria fever worldwide. But with this innovation, the proteins of the causative agent of malaria (plasmodium falciparum) can be detected in the urine.
The test tells in 25 minutes or less if a fever suspected of being malaria or not.
“This is history in the making. This is Nigeria’s moment. This is the first test that was validated completely in Nigeria, ” says Dr. Eddy Agbo chairman, chief executive officer of Fyodor Biotechnologies, at the press breifing in Lagos.
“We all know how malaria kills especially in children. It affects 97 countries of the world. So this is our compelling contribution we are offering to the world today and we are proud to deliver it.

Nigerian youths need sex education

A Junior secondary school two student of United Christian Secondary School, Lagos, Christiana Adegbola, dropped out of school because of an unplanned pregnancy. The pregnancy put an end to her education.
"Girls who are smarter than Christiana opt for an abortion; they don't get pregnant anyhow again," said Paul Ekanem, a teacher at the school. "Usually, their friends take them to places where they would get rid of it (abortion)."
According to a study carried out by Campaign Against Unwanted Pregnancy, a nongovernmental organisation, in 2006, young people contribute to more than 60 percent of unsafe abortions that takes place in Nigeria annually. In the same year, the Ministry of Education found that 21 percent of upper primary school pupils aged eight to ten years indicated that they have been involved in sexual intercourse. A recent assessment titled, ‘National Response to Young People's Sexual and Reproductive Health in 2009' showed that nationally, young people lacked the appropriate knowledge on sexuality.
Adenike Esiet, the executive director of Action Health International, a non-government organisation that deals with adolescent reproductive health, said a lack of investment in adolescent reproductive health, as well as lack of youth-friendly services in hospitals were among several other factors responsible for the high rate of teenage pregnancies and youth infected with HIV/AIDS.
What is youth friendliness?
According to Mrs. Esiet, young people should have access to youth-friendly centres, sexuality education in schools and parental input.
"When it comes to the issues of sexual and reproductive health, many of the health facilities are not responsive," she said. "There is limited access in responding to the peculiar needs of young people all over Nigeria."
Mrs. Esiet said that by not wanting to talk about sexuality with youth, healthcare providers were doing more harm than good.
"Concerning the issue of HIV/AIDS, they (youth) are discriminated against," she said. "They (healthcare providers) ask... "‘what business do you have going into sexual activity in the first place?'"
The executive director explained that healthcare providers must be comfortable discussing the issues of sexuality with young people devoid of judgemental attitudes.
Sexuality curriculum
Following the study that showed that 60 percent of all reported cases of HIV/AIDS in the country came from the age group 15-24 years, the Federal Government introduced the Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) curriculum into junior secondary schools nationwide. Family life education was first introduced into two core subjects: Integrated Science and Social Studies in 2003.
It covers human development, puberty, body image, self esteem, personal skills, HIV infection, relationships, making choices, assertiveness, society and culture. Mrs. Esiet said Lagos state was leading other states in implementing the curriculum. An integrated science teacher at Model College, Ikorodu, Mr. Oloyede, said he had noticed a slight improvement.
"The students love the subject, because it is participatory," he said. "This is a class where you see many of them asking questions. I think they love it, and it will enlighten them."
Another teacher at Randle High School, Apapa, who did not wish to be named, said: "Most of these children have already started experimenting before they even get to the class. But I cannot really say what impact the subjects is having on the students because some of them still get pregnant, and we direct some of them to the Family Planning Clinic at the General Hospital (Apapa) for contraceptives."
Resistance
Officials of the State Ministry of Education and the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency said that due to the success of the implementation, the curriculum is being scaled up to the senior secondary school level.
As a result of an initial protest by parents who felt that the FLHE was teaching sex education, many private schools have not embraced this curriculum.
The admissions officer at Vivian Fowler Girls College, Oregun, said that FLHE was not part of the school's curriculum.
"We follow the WAEC and NECO curriculum and this (FLHE) is not there," she said.

Islamic Suicide Bomber Trainer Accidentally Blows Up His Entire Class

In Baghdad, a terrorist who was in the middle of conducting a training for future militants, accidentally blew up an entire class, killing 21 of his students, and himself. The group was part of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the terror group that has been participating in a string of attacks in the United States.
The incident may be viewed as a metaphor for the many lives lost in the wake of foreign and domestic terrorists’ relentless attempts to convert the nation into an extreme-religious state. In this turn of events, it appears that many innocent lives may have actually been spared. In fact, in one recent attack alone, 7 innocent people were killed.

Located at the Redemption Camp besides the children’s auditorium, the amusement park project was initiated by the wife of the church’s General Overseer and head of the Directorate of Teens and Children Education (DTCE), Pastor (Mrs) Folu Adeboye.
Speaking during a short documentary on the project at the November Holy Ghost Service, Adeboye explained that the essence of the park is to enable children within and outside the camp to have a balanced life: spiritually and physically, explaining that the facilities would be available for schools and families, who want to visit the place for relaxation.
She noted that parents do not have to take their children outside the country for sight seeing as the park will be fully equipped with modern accessories that will be of great benefit for the younger ones.   Mrs Adeboye further stated that the ministry is the first to embark on such a project. She therefore enjoined members to support the laudable project, revealing that about N500 million has been expended on the project, noting that about N150 million is still needed to install CCTV cameras, game machines, toilet facilities, Amphi Theater and other features at the park.

It can reveal exclusively today that Golden Eaglets’ goals’ merchant, Victor Osimhen has been offered one million Euros (about N211,851,907:50) by UEFA Champions League champions, FC Barcelona.
We scooped further that Barcelona FC chiefs are willing to storm Nigeria to perfect the signing of Osimhen’s contract documents, with word rife that the Spanish side are ready to outbid whatever offer any Euroepan side throws on the table for the current FIFA U-17 World Cup winner and the competition’s highest goal scorer with 10 goals.
Indeed,it was gathered that Osimhen’s agent, Shera Yusuf is favourably disposed to the enticing offer from Barcelona and the prospect of his ward training with soccer greats such as Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luiz Suarez.
Interestingly, those who should know at Osimhen’s amateur side told an international media site that Barcelona’s youth scout Ryan Hartsfield, a FIFA licensed agent, is willing to come to Lagos to begin negotiating the deal, even as it has been confirmed that Hartsfield has been authorised not to allow Osimhen slip through Barcelona’s talent-hunt net.

Oversea Jobs:What You Must Know

Getting a hold of the proper documents to work overseas may seem like an overwhelming, frightening idea. In actuality, it's pretty easy. Here is our guide to preparing for your overseas employment opportunity.
  1. Know Your Local Consulate
If you're looking to work overseas, the consular should be your new best friend. A consular is by definition "An official appointed by a government to reside in a foreign country and represent his or her government's commercial interests and assist its citizens there.More importantly, a consular is your ticket to obtaining all the entry/residency requirements you'll need to work in that country. This is where you apply for your visa or permit. Most countries position several consulate offices in each foreign country, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding one. For instance, if you're traveling to France from Australia, you'll look up the French Embassy in Australia who can in turn point you to your local consulate office. They can be referred to as a consulate, consular, or consulate general. No matter the title, it all means the same thing to you: easily processing your international employment status.
  2. Meet the Embassy
A country's main presence in a foreign country is often an embassy. This is an important source of information for anyone who would like to travel or work overseas. They can also assist you in finding the nearest consulate office. An Embassy is also sometimes called a "High Commission."
  3. Working Overseas vs. Playing Overseas
To travel overseas as a tourist and to travel overseas as an employee are two very different situations. Be aware that the entry procedures and requirements are usually not the same. For instance, in many cases, tourists do not need a visa, permitted their stay does not last longer than a certain time. When entering the country as an employee, not only does the visit often last longer, requiring a different visa, but the government might have a say in the activities you can engage in while in the country.
  4. Be in Touch With Your Employer
Your employer overseas will most likely be responsible for obtaining your work permit. And without a work permit, you will not be able to process your visa application. Your employer will also have to produce a contract of employment that determines your length of stay in the country and other documents concerning their business validity and your employment.
  5. Allow Yourself Extra Time
This process can be very time consuming, so allow yourself plenty of time to complete the visa/work permit process. Processing time can take anywhere from 2 days in some countries to 6 months in others. Your employer will have to arrange for certain documents (and their approval) as well before you can even begin applying for your visa. If you rush through the procedures you could miss an important step and have to start from scratch.
  6. Documents to Have Available
Every country requires different documentation for the visa/work permit application. Some items/documents to have on hand include:
    1. a valid passport
    2. 2 or more passport size photos
    3. documentation from your employer
    4. a statewide criminal history record check
    5. a medical certificate.
