Intel to cut 12,000 jobs from global operations

Intel sign
US tech giant Intel is shedding 12,000 jobs as it seeks to cut reliance on the declining personal computer market.
The maker of computer chips will take a $1.2bn charge to cover restructuring costs.
The job cuts, about 11% of Intel's workforce, will be made over the next 12 months,Intel said in a statement.
Intel said it wants to "accelerate evolution from a PC company to one that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices".
The company also said on Tuesday chief financial officer Stacy Smith would move to a new role leading sales, manufacturing and operations.
Intel said it would begin a formal search process for a successor.
Shares in the company were down 2.5% in after-hours trading on Wall Street. Intel's stock price had already fallen 8.4% this year.

Limpopo gay man beaten and stabbed, then arrested

Tshifhiwa Ramurunzi after being attacked on Thursday
A young gay man in Limpopo was nearly killed by a homophobic assailant, only to be arrested when he tried to report his attacker.
Activists are outraged at the news of another suspected LGBT hate crime, this time in the town of Thohoyandou.

According to reports received, Tshifhiwa Ramurunzi, 21, was attacked at a bar in the town while wearing traditionally female clothing.
The victim, who identifies as gay, claims that he was harassed by a man because of his appearance. The verbal abuse escalated and Ramurunzi was beaten and stabbed outside the bar.
He was left bleeding on the ground, surrounded by a pool of blood and broken beer bottles as onlookers took pictures of the scene.
The photos were posted on social media, along with claims that he had been killed. Activists from Limpopo LGBTI, Univen LGBTI and the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) investigated.
They discovered that the victim had been taken to the hospital and was in fact alive.
“We tracked him down,” Victor Raedane from TVEP  “He stays in a remote village outside the town. We found him sleeping on the couch on Saturday, still bleeding with many stitches.”
Ramurunzi agreed to go to a trauma centre in Thohoyandou and to report the attack to the police.
Shockingly, when he laid a charge at the police station on Monday afternoon he was arrested because his alleged attacker, who was also arrested, had filed an assault charge against him.
Infuriated, the activists gathered outside the police station in protest against the arrest. After they spoke to a Brigadier Linda, Ramurunzi – who was still recovering from his wounds – was placed in a single cell for his protection.
“He was detained in his bleeding condition,” said a distraught Raedane. “He has so many lacerations, on his face, back and front.”
On Tuesday morning, after the prosecutor reviewed the statements in the case, the charges against Ramurunzi were dropped and he was released. It’s expected that his alleged attacked will be tried, possibly for attempted murder.
“He [Ramurunzi] is now with members of the LGBT community,” said Raedane. “We are referring him back to hospital and finding a safe house where he can recuperate and to make sure that he is safe.”
Lerato Phalakatshela, Hate Crime Manager at OUT LGBT Well-being and spokesperson for the Love. Not Hate campaign, described the attack as “horrific”.
“It’s quite scary and shocking that a human would attack another human like that,” he said.
“It’s also a clear indication of secondary victimisation of the victim by the police. How do arrest somebody that’s in that condition?” he asked.
Last month, Lucia Naido, a young lesbian woman, was stabbed to death on the night of her birthday in Katlehong on Johannesburg’s East Rand, in another suspected hate crime.
Mambaonline has learned that the much vaunted government-led “Rapid Response Team”, which is meant to monitor and fast track LGBTI related hate crimes, last met almost a year ago, in June 2015.

Woman gives birth in Poland after being declared brain dead

A brain-dead Polish woman was kept alive for 55 days so that she could give birth, a hospital official said on Thursday, adding the premature baby showed no signs of serious complications.
"It's rare to successfully maintain a pregnancy for so long, that it is at such an early stage, at 17 or 18 weeks," said Barbara Krolak-Olejnik, head of the neonatal unit at the University Hospital in the southern city of Wroclaw.
The 41-year-old mother was rushed to hospital by ambulance late last year and deemed brain dead due to brain cancer.
"Her whole family wanted us to try to save the child," Krolak-Olejnik said, adding that the baby boy was born in January in the 26th week of pregnancy.

"It was a long 55-day battle. We doctors wanted the little man to grow as big as possible but there came a day when there was a real danger to his life, so we opted for delivery."
The baby was delivered by caesarean section and weighed just one kilogram (2.2 pounds) at birth, but is now up to three kilograms after three months of intensive care and has just left hospital showing "no complications".

How to Quit Smoking

Whether you’re a teen smoker or a lifetime pack-a-day smoker, quitting can be tough. But the more you learn about your options and prepare for quitting, the easier the process will be. With the right game plan tailored to your needs, you can break the addiction, manage your cravings, and join the millions of people who have kicked the habit for good.
While some smokers successfully quit by going cold turkey, most people do better with a plan to keep themselves on track. A good plan addresses both the short-term challenge of quitting smoking and the long-term challenge of preventing relapse. It should also be tailored to your specific needs and smoking habits.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Do you feel the need to smoke at every meal?
  • Are you more of a social smoker?
  • Is it a very bad addiction (more than a pack a day)? Or would a simple nicotine patch do the job?
  • Do you reach for cigarettes when you're feeling stressed or down?
  • Are there certain activities, places, or people you associate with smoking?
  • Is your cigarette smoking linked to other addictions, such as alcohol or gambling?
  • Are you someone who is open to talking about your addiction with a therapist or counsellor

Start your stop smoking plan with START

S = Set a quit date.
Choose a date within the next two weeks, so you have enough time to prepare without losing your motivation to quit. If you mainly smoke at work, quit on the weekend, so you have a few days to adjust to the change.
T = Tell family, friends, and co-workers that you plan to quit.
Let your friends and family in on your plan to quit smoking and tell them you need their support and encouragement to stop. Look for a quit buddy who wants to stop smoking as well. You can help each other get through the rough times.
A = Anticipate and plan for the challenges you'll face while quitting.
Most people who begin smoking again do so within the first three months. You can help yourself make it through by preparing ahead for common challenges, such as nicotine withdrawal and cigarette cravings.
R = Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and work.
Throw away all of your cigarettes (no emergency pack!), lighters, ashtrays, and matches. Wash your clothes and freshen up anything that smells like smoke. Shampoo your car, clean your drapes and carpet, and steam your furniture.
T = Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit.
Your doctor can prescribe medication to help with withdrawal and suggest other alternatives. If you can't see a doctor, you can get many products over the counter at your local pharmacy or grocery store, including the nicotine patch, nicotine lozenges, and nicotine gum.

How to quit smoking: Manage cigarette cravings

Avoiding smoking triggers will help reduce the urge to smoke, but you can't avoid cravings entirely. But cigarette cravings don't last long, so if you're tempted to light up, remember that the craving will pass and try to wait it out. It also helps to be prepared in advance. Having a plan to cope with cravings will help keep you from giving in.
  • Distract yourself. Do the dishes, turn on the TV, take a shower, or call a friend. The activity doesn't matter as long as it gets your mind off of smoking.
  • Remind yourself why you quit. Focus on your reasons for quitting, including the health benefits, improved appearance, money you're saving, and enhanced self-esteem.
  • Get out of a tempting situation. Where you are or what you're doing may be triggering the craving. If so, a change of scenery can make all the difference.
  • Reward yourself. Reinforce your victories. Whenever you triumph over a craving, give yourself a reward to keep yourself motivated.
  • Pray: Sometimes, you cannot prevail by your own strength,so you need to pray because if you don't deal with the situation from the spirit, you cannot overcome your smoking addiction. Its very simple, smoking could be a stronghold so just loose yourself from your smoking addiction
