Just like pregnancy test done at home, malaria can now be tested by self, at home and at ease.
Scientists from Fyodor Biotechnologies, Baltimore, USA and Geneith Pharamaceuticals in Lagos, on Wednesday unveiled the first ever urine-based test for malaria fever.
Hitherto, blood-based test has been the only means of detecting malaria fever worldwide. But with this innovation, the proteins of the causative agent of malaria (plasmodium falciparum) can be detected in the urine.
The test tells in 25 minutes or less if a fever suspected of being malaria or not.
“This is history in the making. This is Nigeria’s moment. This is the first test that was validated completely in Nigeria, ” says Dr. Eddy Agbo chairman, chief executive officer of Fyodor Biotechnologies, at the press breifing in Lagos.
“We all know how malaria kills especially in children. It affects 97 countries of the world. So this is our compelling contribution we are offering to the world today and we are proud to deliver it.
