A convicted young man in his 30s has been given life imprisonment for raping his mother.
The mother, who was aged 60 at the time, was saved by a neighbor who heard the old woman crying for help so he assumed the woman was being raped by a stranger so he called the police to her rescue. He was arrested.
On Thursday Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said the offense fell into the “wholly exceptional” category of rape
which deserve a life sentence.
The 35-year-old Wexford man, who cannot be named, has previously served a lengthy sentence for raping young girls in their teens over four year ago.
At the time of the latest attack on his mother he
was on bail for kidnapping and seriously assaulting his girlfriend
the previous year. Last December he was jailed for three and a half
years for raping a 10yr old girl.
Mr Justice McCarthy agreed to extend legal aid in the event the man decides to appeal the sentence or conviction.
