Cafe library opens in Sharjah to mark World Book Day

The first branch of Maktaba, a bookshop and cafe for children and young adults in the UAE will open on Thursday in Al Qasba to mark World Book Day.
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority and founder and chief executive officer of Kalimat Group inaugurated the shop.
Maktaba, a bookshop that houses a library and a cafe under the same roof, aims to introduce a unique environment that enriches the experience of reading.
Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi said: “We want our children to have a better understanding of life and the world around them and to equip them to deal effectively with life’s challenges. Through reading, they can expand their knowledge and understanding of future prospects to contribute to the development of their community and their country.” Maktaba has both printed and electronic publications.
The first branch in Al Qasba will be followed by more branches across the country.
Maktaba’s goal is to change the way future generations read through offering a pleasant environment where they can enjoy books with their family, friends and colleagues.
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi added that the inauguration is in line with World Book Day and with 2016 being declared the Year of Reading in the UAE as well as the directives of Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, supreme council member and Ruler of Sharjah, to promote culture and knowledge in the emirate.
