India has welcomed the election of veteran Portuguese diplomat Antonio Manuel de Olivera Guterres as the new Secretary General of the United Nations. A press release from the UN Information Centre in India, said that a formal vote is expected even as Ambassador Guterres, emerged as the “clear favourite” for the top post of the organisation following six rounds of informal votes.
India’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin was the first to extend greetings on behalf of India to the new official. “Congratulations and best wishes. India welcomes Antonio Manuel de Olivera Guterres as the next Secretary General of UN,” said Mr Akbaruddin on Twitter.
