Donald Trump said Fidel Castro was a 'brutal dictator' who
oppressed his people in statement following the legendary Cuban leader's death,
giving a nod to group of veterans of the 1961 bay of pigs invasion.
Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama has vowed to
"extend a hand of friendship to the Cuban people".
Obama said in a statement that "history will record and
judge the enormous impact" of Castro's 47-year rule.
"We know that this moment fills Cubans - in Cuba and in
the United States - with powerful emotions, recalling the countless ways in
which Fidel Castro altered the course of individual lives, families, and of the
Cuban nation," he said.
Obama added that his government had "worked hard to put
the past behind us" through a rapprochement with Cuba and restoration of
diplomatic ties, and that Cubans now looking to the future "have a friend
and partner in the United States of America."
