A woman in the Algarve has given birth in an ambulance after
failing to get to a hospital on time.
The 37-year old woman from Tavira had called in the
emergency yesterday morning after experiencing severe contractions.
Paramedics decided to deliver the baby inside the ambulance
before transporting the healthy mother and child to Faro Hospital.
Media reports indicate that the number of children being
born outside of hospitals in Tavira has been on the increase since the closure
of a neonatal unit in the city back in the 1980s.
