Why raising Colorado’s minimum wage would harm small businesses

One consequence of Amendment 70 — which would raise Colorado’s minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020 — is that it will strengthen the shift of dominance to chains and larger corporations, while hastening the demise of the small business — a phenomenon that we have all been witnessing for years. For example, in my industry, corporate pizza chains using pre-processed food produced in automated commissaries will flourish while family-owned pizzerias with higher labor costs (human element) will be faced with a decision to either shut down, reduce staff, or cut ingredient quality to remain competitive. Businesses such as mine that refuse to cut quality will have to raise prices and will also lose market share. Giving everyone raises sounds wonderful, but in the end we all lose as brand diversity and product quality vanish and we step closer to a world of giant companies and fewer choices. Please vote “no” on Amendment 70.
