1. 1532 - Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish explorer and
conquistador, springs a trap on the Incan emperor, Atahualpa. Pizarro's men
massacre the Incans and capture Atahualpa, forcing him to convert to
Christianity before eventually killing him
2. 1776 - British troops captures Fort Washington during the
American Revolution
3. 1907 - Oklahoma becomes the 46th state of the United
States of America
4. 1933 - The United States and the Soviet Union establish
diplomatic relations
5. 1959 - The Sound of Music premieres on Broadway
6. 1960 - The TV personality with a reputation for
outspokenness, Gilbert Harding, dies as he leaves the BBC's Broadcasting House
in London
7. 1976 - Seven men who took part in an £8m bank robbery
receive jail terms totalling nearly 100 years. The raid at the Bank of America
in Mayfair, London, is believed to be the world's biggest
8. 1983 - More than 20 English football supporters are
arrested in Luxembourg after a night of violence
9. 1999 - Johnny Depp receives a star on the Hollywood Walk
of Fame
10. 2001 - The first Harry Porter film, Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer’s Stone, opens in cinemas
11. 2004 - President George W. Bush nominates Condoleezza
Rice to replace Colin Powell as Secretary of State
